The Intimacy Couple: Till Death Do Us Part (Painted before Xmas, 18)

"When the lantern light is at its dimmest, there's no one else I'd rather have at my bank. The Intimacy Couple faces peril together, unflinching faith in their union to the end, even as it draws near."

- Kingdom Death Store

In a previous post, I mentioned how much I liked the idea of the intimacy couple as a mechanic in the game. So it stands to reason that when the special Till Death Do We Part came up last Black Friday for half off, I bought it. Since I actually decided to work on the individual intimacy miniatures as practice for this miniature set. I was able to work on this a few days before Xmas, 2018 and I think I either finished the day before or after the day of presents.

With this miniature, I wanted to honor my previous palette scheme decisions from both the Intimacy Female and Intimacy Male. I started first by painting the  Intimacy Female miniature separate from the stand.

I rushed a bit with this painting job, so all in all, I think that the quality dipped in a few areas. Also, the material that the miniatures were made out of is very different than what I'm used to (not sure what it's called, sorry) and that seems to have affected the overall finish.

Still, the Intimacy Female miniature came out pretty well. As always, I was focused on the details. I used subtle washing techniques to create the shadowing and did a few layers for the dry-brush highlighting. I'm happier with the eyes on the female this time around than I was with the previous. Maybe I'm improving...

Next was the male. Like the female, I painted him separate from the base. I focused on detailed elements, and used much the same techniques as before. Sadly, the eyes on this one came out worse then my previous attempt at the Intimacy Male. You win some, you lose some.

Something about these renditions of the Intimacy Couple:

1. These miniatures aren't exactly styled the same as the previous. The facial structures aren't the same, and the body structure is a bit different too. The Intimacy Female's face seems a bit more rounded and less angular than before. Also, the Intimacy Male seems a bit more hefty. It was hard to get a pic that made him look good. It's my only real disappointment with this miniature special.

Also, I went ahead and did red highlights in the female's hair, per my significant other's suggestion. It came out better!

2. Not too sure if it's noticeable, but another slight issue I had: the material that was used for the miniatures is different from any material I painted on before. As such, my finished product came out very shiny. A lot of elements of a miniature do well with being a bit shiny, but when cloth comes out shiny, it's detracting. I hope that my future miniatures are not made with this material.

Of course, by now you've noticed the custom base. This is another of the custom bases that I purchased from ordoshelican on eBay. The 30mm bases worked great. This 50mm base was a very tight fit; I actually had to sand down the sides till I was able to get it to work out. I wanted to make the stone faces cry out the yellow glow that seems to be a reoccurring theme in Kingdom Death. All in all, I think it came out pretty well.

I painted this bit last and glued the miniatures after everything dried with gel superglue.

In the end, painting these miniatures right after having worked on the individual miniatures was probably not the best idea. I probably would have paid more attention to them if I wasn't thinking so much about, "what will I do next?" Effectively, I was burnt out from painting the Intimacy miniatures. Still, it was fun to strategize how to paint this couple, and I still love having it completed. Can't wait to use it on the board!

As always, I hope that this showcase is enjoyed by all whom read it. Please, please feel free share any comments or critiques. If you find my blog enjoyable, be sure to follow and subscribe. Not sure what either do but should be fun either way.

Thanks very much!

    1. Thanks much! The effect in the pic actually came by accident. My finance does the pictures and with this, we tried using my painting light as an additional light source. It has a magnifying glass and when we placed it on the board, it created a really nice halo effect. We'll likely use it again.
