Presenting the Devil Satan Miniature: Satan Dressed As... The Devil! (Painted Mid Nov, 18)
The Devil Satan Miniature was a special offer that became first available from the Kingdom Death Store last Halloween in 2018. This was one of 2 miniatures that I purchased during this special event (the other was the Twilight Knight Halloween Edition Miniature that was showcased in the previous blog post). This was somewhat serendipitous;
This special was an interesting one; the special ran for $50 and came with 2 separate pinup miniatures. However, unlike the norm, one was 30mm while the other was 50mm (see picture below).
Anyway, by now it was mid November and I wanted to paint another miniature and i was debating on one of the Devil Satan miniatures. Ultimately I decided to paint the 30mm miniature for 2 reasons:
1. It was usable for the game while the 50mm was made more for just for miniature painter hobbyists (not a bad thing).
2. The larger 50mm miniature has penises coming out of the pumpkin. At the time, I wasn't ballsy enough to do a miniature penis justice. Mind you, the 30mm has penises too (took a close up) but I didn't feel guilty when I just gave em all a base coat and called it a day.
So of course, the color theme revolves around the artist's rendition and for the most part, I honored that pretty well. My focus was more towards the details of the miniature; you can see the pentagram details around the neck and the left leg. These were free hand painted, and I think this was the first time I had such success with such a detail.
One of the new things that I tried out for this miniature was to add a custom base insert. The insert was purchased on EBay from seller Ordoshelican. The nice thing about the purchase is that you get a lot of 30mm and 50mm DKM base inserts. The price is reasonable and each require minimal modification unless you feel inclined. I wanted the base to represent a muddy stone path that's being overcome by a kind of lava pool.
When painting I found 2 elements rather challenging: the clothing of the miniature (specifically the straps that hug the sides) as well as the hair. The clothing probably makes sense - a lot of deft painting is required. The hair presented a challenge because I didn't just want to go light sliver and call it a day. I made a base by blending off-white along with a silver metallic paint. This gave a light silver start. Then I tried to go with off-white dry-brush effects to highlight the hair. I tired this multiple times because I just wasn't happy with the outcome. In the end, it's nice, but I really need to learn how to do hair better.
Oh, I also attempted the eyes this time. It came out alright...
I wanted to showcase a rather interesting accessory that this character has. I've read more than a few articles discussing how many miniature painters and gamers are put off because of the overt sexuality (bordering on pornography) that is exhibited in Kingdom Death. Ultimately this decision is very personal and shouldn't be trivialized. For myself, I thought I'd be weirded out by painting detached penises that overflow from a jack-o-lantern. However, I realized while painting this miniature that the only reason why I felt weirded out was really because of my concern of being judged harshly by others that are weirded out (or worse) by this aspect of the game. To me, a lot of the gruesome sexuality is embedded in the myth and style of the overall Kingdom Death universe, and I don't see it as a detractor to that universe. Indeed, if it were to be removed after-the-fact, I'd see it as a detractor to what's been established, and also an attempt at censorship. Once I started thinking that, I said to myself, "I'm thinking to much about this. I'll do a blog post about this topic sometime..." Anyway, afterwards painting penises became easier.
I'm pretty happy with the cape of the Devil Satan miniature. This was an excellent opportunity to go a bit more dramatic with wash shading and dry-brush highlighting and so I just went with it. So far, I think that this was my best work. It aspect of the miniature was probably my best learning experience during the painting.
In the end, this was a very fun experience, especially with using a custom base insert and all the other aspects of the miniature. As always, I hope that this showcase is enjoyed and please feel free share any comments or critiques. If you find my blog enjoyable, be sure to follow or subscribe.
